The Mumbai Monsoon is on full steam. It is pelting like crazy and its driving everyone crazy too. No one’s spared. Not even me.
As I watch the rains, my Funnybone came up checking on me and I got chatting.
So, here are snippets from this chat I had with my Funnybone.

I made my first investment in mutual funds on Nov 5, 2004. It was a tax saving mutual fund.
Before that, I was investing in stocks too. I invested in a few including an IPO. But stock investing was too much to handle for me. Given my laziness I could never make the effort to build a decent stock portfolio. (Yes, I believe it takes work.) I sold the IPO soon after pocketing some nice listing gains.
Now, the next best option was investing through equity mutual funds. I invested these ready made stock portfolios managed by some of the best minds, read, fund managers.
It has been so far, so good.
However, for the last few weeks I have been thinking, in fact rethinking, my decision.
I have been evaluating the other side of mutual funds. Yes, they have a lot of good features but then every coin has two sides. Here is what is going on in my mind.
The new financial year starts today. It is a day to make new beginnings.
Today, I would like to share with you all that I learnt about investing in all these years. It worked for me, I hope it works for you too.

If you are familiar with online investments in mutual funds, you would know about Common Account Number or CAN and how it gets you a single point access to transact online in direct plans of several mutual funds. The CAN is issued by MFU, a mutual fund industry initiative.
In fact, Unovest too uses MFU’s infrastructure at the backend to process online transactions in direct plans.
However, the creation of CAN was a paper based process till now.
The good news is that CAN has now gone electronic. It means that you can now apply and get your CAN online, completely paperless.
Let’s now quickly dive in and create an e-CAN.
In an earlier post, we built a winning equity mutual fund portfolio. This time we will look at debt mutual funds and see which ones can best deliver on your investment goals.
As I set out to select debt mutual funds, I realised this huge challenge staring at me. If selecting equity funds was like running a marathon, selecting debt mutual funds is akin to climbing Mount Everest.
