How to track mutual funds portfolio all in one place?

How should one track mutual funds portfolio – all of it in one place? This has been a common problem expressed by many investorsAny why not?

There are 44 mutual fund companies in India along with 4 registrar and transfer agents who handle customer transactions.

If you happen to have investments in just 4 mutual funds, that is, HDFC, Quantum, Sundaram and Franklin Templeton, you are going to have an interesting time tracking all these investments with multiple folios in one single place.

Add to that investments in the name of family members and you have got a multiplication of your tracking troubles.

So, you are looking for a solution that enables you to:

  • Track mutual funds portfolio – all investment folios including of family – in one place
  • See a quick summary of your investments
  • An analysis of your investment holdings
  • Track your capital gain and loss for reporting in your income tax returns
  • Tag your investments to specific goals and monitor the progress

Is there a solution where you can do it all and more?

Yes, there is, in fact, there are many.

What I would like to tell you about today is the one that is now used by over 3000 investors – Unovest.

You can now track all of your mutual fund portfolio in one place and do all analysis and reporting  just a while before, on the Unovest Platform. This is just one of the many amazing things Unovest makes possible for you.

All you need is an email id that is registered with your mutual fund folios.

Now you can watch this video below to know how or read the entire set of instructions that follow.

Here is a step by step process of how you can do this.

Step 1: Download the consolidated account statement from CAMS

If you have registered an email address in your folios across funds serviced by CAMS, Karvy, FTAMIL (Franklin) and SBFS (Sundaram BNP), you can use the CAMS Mailback Service to obtain a consolidated PDF Account Statement at your registered email address.

Visit the following link: http://www.camsonline.com/InvestorServices/COL_ISAccountStatementCKF.aspx

If the above link throws an error, see this video for an alternative path to download the CAMS statement.

You will come to a screen like this.

Consolidated statement download

Select the various fields as suggested in the screenshot and press submit.

You will receive a consolidated account statement in your email.

Please note: For reasons of security the statement will be encrypted using the password provided by you, and emailed only to the address provided earlier in your application form.

This service is linked to your email id. If you do not have your email id registered in your mutual funds, those transactions will not appear.

In case you registered multiple email ids for different mutual funds, then you have to download separate statements using each of the email ids.

If you want to generate separate statement based on a specific PAN holder, then mention the PAN of the primary holder in the form. The statement from CAMS will show only those funds.

Step 2: Upload and track mutual funds portfolio on Unovest

Now go to Unovest Platform (smart.unovest.co) and login to your account.

In case you do not have an account yet, you can quickly create a Free Account. It takes just a minute or so.

Once you login, you will see an option to “Upload Portfolio” on the left panel. When you click on it, the screen below would appear.

Upload and track mutual funds portfolio on Unovest

By now, you would have downloaded the statement that was sent to you by CAMS to your email id.

Upload this PDF statement using this screen.

Since you have a password for the file, the program, in the next screen, will request you to enter the same so that it can read the file.

As soon as you provide the password and click on ‘Process‘, all the transactions will be uploaded.

Note: While the process is extremely smooth, in some rare cases, there might a few transactions or schemes that might not be identified by the system. The system will prompt you to help with those. In that case, all you have to do is to type the correct transaction type or scheme name in the box alongside the identified transaction or scheme. For the scheme name, a drop down will appear as you start typing and you can select the fund that you have invested in.

If you have downloaded multiple statements for different email ids, repeat the above process.

Done! Great, you can now proceed to view some quick reports under the My Reports section.

Currently, you can see reports such as:

  • Portfolio Summary that shows all your current holdings along with weightage and performance as annualised return (measured with XIRR)
  • Portfolio Analysis that gives a break up of your portfolio to help you understand its composition
  • Gain / Loss Report to understand the gains you have made and help you with tax reporting
  • Savings Report that shows you how much commission you are likely paying in your regular plan investments
  • Switch report where you can find out which funds and units are free to switch / sell

Did I tell you the best part?

You can also transact online in your current folios and mutual fund schemes on Unovest platform itself. If you are planning to switch from regular to direct plans, you can do it right here.

As mentioned before, over 3000 investors are using it already to their track mutual funds portfolio.

So, what are you waiting for? Start tracking all your mutual fund transactions today in one place.

Between you and me: I would love to know about your experience using Unovest for your portfolio. Please do share your feedback with me.

  1. Hi, is there a mobile app for the same ?
Also that i wish to track the mutual fund of me plus three other family members in one place itself, right next to each other

  2. Hi..

Need to have a clarity on whether Direct Investments added to your portfolio & transact..
Also, give me a clarity on the charges for using your portal..

    Thanks,
    Arun.

  3. Hi Vipin,
I registered at your site and tried to upload my CAS statement and after uploading the password I’m getting a message “No valid Data found / Invalid File !!!”
The file is very much ok and I re-opened it to recheck and it has no problem at all.
    Please do guide me.

  4. Hi Vipin
Recenty signed up with Unovest and liked it.However I would like to know if there can be an option to invest in a group of MF as a portfolio and track them that way.For example If I have 3 different goals and identified 4 MFs for each goals ,can I have the option to invest and track in each of the portfolio as a unit

    • Hi Amit, thanks for signing up. As of now the option that you mention is not there. Though I am sure you would know about the goal tracking feature that allows you to map your folios to your goals even in a certain percentage. Do try it out. You can also use the ask a query feature within unovest to ask any questions. Happy to hear any further feedback.

  5. Hi,

Signed up recently. Very promising service if you’re able to polish the interface sufficiently. I have signed up with MFUonline, so have the CAN and Payeez mandate ready. Had a few questions:

    1. Keeping aside the advisory services, are you planning to have any transactions costs? (like Orowealth?)
    2. Will your platform be providing the option to purchase MFs not currently on MFU? (say Mirae Assets?)
    3. Any plans to get an Android App?

    Best of luck,
    Roy

    • Thanks for writing Roy. Would love to note your suggestions on the interface. To answer your questions:

      1. There would never be any per transaction cost. The entire service would be available for a flat fee per year.
      2. As of now, we would only be providing funds offered via MFU. In fact, other funds would be on MFU soon and so with us too.
      3. Yes, there are plans definitely. I am looking for ideas on what all should there be on the app to make it worthwhile.

      Thanks
      Vipin

      • Hi,

Thanks for your response. Now that I’ve decided to go Direct MFs my concern is that – Is there really an advantage paying for a portal (whether yours or Orowealth) when you’re leveraging MFU infrastructure, who are providing this functionality for free.

I understand the added advisory service, but I would rather look at paying for these services as an when I require them. Is there a plan to have a free account with the option to pay per advise or something like that? What do you think?

      • And on the interface – The site is very clean. However it lacks the polish you’d find across some of the more mature options like Fundsindia or the clearly well funded new entrants like Orowealth or Invezta. Although, that said, your portal is much better than mfuonline. That’s a absolute pain.
I’m sure as you invest in the product the interface will improve drastically. With a lot of start ups entering this space and most (almost all) relying on the MFU infrastructure, the interface is what’ll eventually make the difference.

On the app – Again, fundsindia would be a good benchmark. The ability to track performance, make / schedule / hold payments, research etc.

  6. Hii
Is the Portfolio monitoring free in Unovest?
Can one buy direct MF from unovest?
How will be the charge for transaction?
It supports only CAMS statement or NSDL/CDSL common account statement also?

  7. Hi Vipin,

I am new to mutual fund’s world and read your site regularly.I created an account on mfuonline and am able to see all the transactions there. Your website provides a lot more information the mfu. Do you plan to make it paid in the near future like investza ?
Account creation and PDF upload was seamless. Very good site. Kudos.

  8. For the record, this is what I would like:

    – What percentage of my assets are in equity vs debt vs liquid instruments?
    – What percentage of my money is invested abroad?
    – What has been my XIRR on a real basis?
    – What has been the inflation over this time period?
    – How much of my portfolio value is due to appreciation vs investments? For example, if I have 50 lac, is 10 lac appreciation and 40 lac investments?
    – What has been the biggest fall in my portfolio?
    – What is the longest period of time over which my portfolio has had negative return? Negative nominal return? Return worse than debt?
    – What is my asset allocation across caps?
